DIS Society

Dis Society is the Swedish Computer Genealogy Society, and stands for Datorhjälp i släktforskningen.  The fee website has links to trees submitted by members which can be searched, as well as forums on which matters of Swedish genealogy are discussed.  There are two levels of membership.  For US$22 you have access to all of their internet services, or for US$35 the magazine Diskulogen is included.  A good understanding of Swedish language is helpful.

ArkivDigital

ArkivDigital is one of the websites I use to research Swedish records.  You can subscribe to their image database, or you can order records and have CD-Roms sent to you.  They have a variety of subscription levels from one week to two years - including discounts for subscribers to the Swedish American Genealogist!

The 49 million records, Church, Court and Estate Inventories they have on their database are new color images.  The image below is from the Hedemora, (Nås fjärding), Husförhörslängd AIb:5b (1885-1897), page 53.

One of the features I like using is the dropdown box that allows easy navigation around a scanned volume.  In the case when a volume has page numbers a drop down box will have the Image Number as well as the Page Number.

ArkivDigital also has a number of tutorials that help researchers become acquainted with the various records they have on their website.

Return to Grådö

David Anderson, a descendant of Fred Anderson at the house site Svens

It is June 23, 2014, the last full day of my fourth trip to Sweden.  My hosts and I are looking for the site for a house that no longer exists.  The house was torn down during WWII and the wood was sent to Stockholm to be used as firewood to help keep people warm.  Apparently that wasn't too uncommon during that time period.  Despite the fact that we have been there before (back in 1998) we can't recall the exact side road we need to turn on to to get to the site.
The house that used to be at this site was called Svens, and it is where my Grandfather Fredrik Anderson was born in 1868.  He lived there until 1889 when he emigrated to McPherson, Kansas, USA.  His older brother Anders Erik followed Fred in 1890, and their parents and two surviving brothers follow in 1892.

Svens is a house near Grådö, a village in Hedemora parish, Sweden.

The house site Svens is behind the trees.

My Grandfather eventually moved to White City, Kansas where he got married with my Grandmother.  Anders Erik had hoped that a special girl he knew from home would come over and they would get married.  However, that never came to be.  Pelles Anna stayed behind and married someone else.  Uncle Eric never married, but his misfortune actually turned out, in the long run, to help me find the location of this house.

This blog will tell the long story about how I got to this point.  I will cover many subjects and there will be tangents because genealogy is full of tangents.
